1 Samuel 23:17

Listen to this article

And he said vnto him, Feare not; for the hand of Saul my father shall not finde thee, and thou shalt be king ouer Israel, and I shall be next vnto thee: and that also Saul my father knoweth. 1 Samuel 23:17 (KJV)

The book of 1 Samuel tells the story of Israel’s transition from the period of judges to the establishment of a monarchy. In this particular passage, David, who has been anointed as the future king of Israel, is on the run from King Saul, who is seeking to kill him.

Jonathan, Saul’s son and David’s dear friend, meets David secretly and reassures him not to be afraid. Jonathan acknowledges the threat Saul poses, but he wants David to find courage in the fact that God’s hand is upon him.

Jonathan affirms that David is destined to be the king of Israel. This confirms God’s earlier promise to David through the prophet Samuel (1 Samuel 16:12‑13). Despite the present circumstances, Jonathan assures David that he will be the future king.

Jonathan humbly recognizes that he will not be the next king, but he declares his willingness to serve and support David as the future king. This demonstrates Jonathan’s loyalty and his submission to God’s plan for David.

Jonathan also acknowledges that Saul, his father, is aware of David’s destiny to be king, implying that Saul’s pursuit of David is a direct opposition to God’s plan and reflecting Saul’s rebellion against God’s anointed.

Key Lessons:

Trusting in God’s protection: Even when facing danger or challenging circumstances, we can find solace in knowing that God’s hand is upon us. David’s experiences throughout his life, including this passage, remind us that God protects and guides His chosen ones.

Fulfilling God’s purpose despite opposition: David’s journey to kingship was not without trials and opposition, yet God’s plan prevailed. No human resistance can ultimately thwart God’s purposes, and we should remain steadfast in pursuing God’s purpose for our lives.

Loyalty and humility in relationships: Jonathan’s loyalty to David is an exemplary model of how believers can support one another in the pursuit of God’s calling. His willingness to serve despite his own aspirations illustrates the power of self‑less devotion to God’s purposes.

Application: Seek opportunities to encourage those facing spiritual battles, as Jonathan did for David. Study God’s promises for your life and apply them in daily decisions. Prioritize humility and loyalty to God above personal ambition.

May the Lord continue to speak truth, love, and hope into your lives.
