Goe, I pray you, prepare yet, and know, and see his place where his haunt is, and who hath seene him there: for it is told mee that he dealeth very subtilly. 1 Samuel 23:22 (KJV)

that

he dealeth very subtilly. 1 Samuel 23:22 (KJV)

In 1 Samuel 23 David was being pursued by King Saul, who sought to kill him out of jealousy. David was seeking refuge in various places, and in this chapter he was in the wilderness of Ziph. Saul’s instruction in this verse is addressed to the inhabitants of the city of Ziph. He tells them to prepare, to observe carefully, and to discover where David is hiding, because it had been reported that David was acting very subtly.

The passage highlights several biblical principles. First, the relationship between David and Jonathan demonstrates the importance of loyalty and friendship. Jonathan remained loyal to David despite his father Saul’s hostility, showing that true friendships are built on trust, support, and self‑lessness.

Second, David’s life repeatedly shows a reliance on God’s guidance and protection. In challenging situations he sought the Lord’s will and depended on Him for deliverance. Believers are likewise encouraged to seek God’s guidance through prayer, Scripture, and wise counsel, trusting Him to lead on the right path.

Third, Saul’s request to gather information about David’s actions underscores the need for wisdom in decision‑making. While David trusted in God, he also took practical steps to protect himself. Christians are called to balance reliance on God’s sovereignty with the use of the wisdom and discernment He provides.

Application of these truths includes cultivating loyal friendships that encourage and strengthen us, actively seeking God’s direction in every decision, and employing practical wisdom alongside faith. As we study this passage, may its timeless principles inspire and guide us in our own journey of faith.
