upon me

let this iniquity

be: and let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine audience, and hear the words of thine handmaid. 1 Samuel 25:24 (KJV)

1 Samuel 25 recounts the story of David and Nabal. David, who was on the run from King Saul, had shown kindness to Nabal’s shepherds and had expected hospitality in return. However, Nabal, a wealthy but foolish man, insulted David and refused to provide provisions for him and his men. In his anger, David decided to take matters into his own hands and planned to destroy Nabal and his household. Abigail, Nabal’s wise and discerning wife, heard of the situation and intervened by gathering a generous offering of food and supplies to present to David, seeking to avert disaster.

“Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: for thou hast done as God liveth, who forbids by me.” “Now therefore, I pray thee, let not blood be shed, neither let thine anger be kindled.”

Abigail takes responsibility for her husband’s foolish actions and acknowledges the gravity of his offense. By stating that David has acted as God liveth, she affirms his righteousness and divine favor. Abigail implores David to accept her offering and spare her household. She recognizes David’s position and appeals to his discernment, assuring him that he will not regret showing mercy and refraining from acting hastily.

Folly and Wisdom: The story of Nabal and Abigail highlights the stark contrast between foolishness and wisdom. Nabal’s rash actions and insults reveal his lack of discernment, while Abigail’s wise intervention demonstrates the importance of wise counsel and understanding.

Self-control and Restraint: David’s initial intention to retaliate against Nabal with violence was driven by anger. However, Abigail’s intervention reminds us of the importance of self-control and the value of restraining ourselves from acting impulsively out of anger or vengeance.

Mercy and Forgiveness: Abigail’s plea for mercy emphasizes the significance of extending forgiveness, even in the face of provocation. By encouraging David to show mercy, Abigail highlights the power of compassion and its potential to avert further harm and foster reconciliation.

Recognizing Authority: Abigail acknowledges David’s position as the future king of Israel. Her respectful approach to him demonstrates the importance of recognizing and respecting rightful authority, even when dealing with challenging situations or individuals.

Seeking Godly Counsel: Abigail’s actions exemplify seeking godly counsel and wisdom in difficult circumstances. She took it upon herself to intercede and prevent calamity, recognizing the righteousness of David’s cause and seeking to prevent him from making a hasty decision.

Practising Wisdom: We are encouraged to seek wisdom and discernment in our own lives, avoiding foolish actions or decisions that may lead to negative consequences.

Exercising Self-control: When faced with provocation or difficult situations, we should strive to exercise self-control, refraining from responding in anger or seeking personal vengeance.

Extending Mercy and Forgiveness: Just as Abigail pleaded for mercy, we should be willing to extend forgiveness and show compassion, even to those who have wronged us, seeking to promote peace and reconciliation.

Recognising and Respecting Authority: It is important to recognise and respect the authority that has been established in various areas of our lives, including government, work, family, and spiritual leadership.

Seeking Godly Counsel: When confronted with challenging situations, seeking godly counsel and wisdom from trusted individuals or mentors can help us navigate difficult decisions and avoid making impulsive choices.
