1 Samuel 25:38

And it came to passe about ten dayes after, that the Lord smote Nabal, that he died. 1 Samuel 25:38 (KJV)

The book of 1 Samuel records Israel’s history as it moves from the era of the judges to the establishment of the monarchy under Saul and later David. Chapter 25 situates a dramatic incident involving David, the wealthy but harsh man Nabal of Maon, and Nabal’s wise wife Abigail. David and his men were dwelling in the wilderness, protecting the shepherds and flocks belonging to Nabal’s household. When David’s men asked Nabal for provisions, he rudely refused, prompting David to plan retaliation.

Before David could act, Abigail intervened. She quickly gathered generous provisions and humbly presented them to David, pleading for mercy and averting bloodshed. Her wise and gentle words led David to recognize God’s hand at work, and he abandoned his vengeful intentions. In response to Abigail’s intervention and God’s guidance, David blessed her and praised her wisdom. Ten days later the LORD struck Nabal, and he died, fulfilling the verse’s statement.

The narrative highlights several enduring lessons. First, divine justice is evident: although Nabal mistreated David, God brought timely judgment, reminding believers that God sees all actions and judges righteously. Second, humility and wisdom are exemplified in Abigail’s character; her quick, humble response prevented disaster and demonstrates the power of gentle, wise speech in tense situations. Third, God’s sovereignty over life and death is displayed in Nabal’s death, showing that God’s timing and authority ultimately prevail over human plans for revenge. Finally, the importance of intercession is underscored by Abigail’s self‑sacrificial plea on behalf of her household, encouraging believers to intercede for others in conflict. Together, the verse and its surrounding narrative affirm God’s justice, the value of humility and wisdom, the certainty of divine sovereignty, and the vital role of intercessory prayer in the life of the faithful.
