Context

This verse closes the account of the Amalekite raid on Ziklag, where David and his men lived. The raiders burned the city and carried away the women, children, and possessions. David pursued them with his six hundred men, and after a long chase, he attacked and defeated the enemy. Here he recovers everything that was taken, including his two wives, Ahinoam and Abigail.

Meaning

The words “recovered all” and “rescued his two wives” show that nothing was left behind. The recovery was complete, as the next verse confirms. This was not a partial victory but a full restoration of family and property. David’s personal loss makes the rescue deeply meaningful, for he received back those he loved.

Biblical connections

Earlier in the chapter, David asked the Lord through the ephod whether he should pursue the raiders, and God promised he would recover all (1 Samuel 30:8). This verse fulfills that promise.
