1 Samuel 6:19

Listen to this article

And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the Arke of the Lord, euen he smote of the people fiftie thousand, and threescore and tenne men: and the people lamented, because the Lord had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter. 1 Samuel 6:19 (KJV)

The book of 1 Samuel records Israel’s transition from the period of judges to the establishment of the monarchy under King Saul and later King David. This verse is part of the account of the return of the Ark of the Covenant to the Israelites by the Philistines.

The Ark of the Lord was a sacred chest that symbolized the presence of God among the people. It originally contained the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments; later tradition records that Aaron’s rod and a jar of manna were placed in the ark after its restoration (see 1 Kings 7:51), though these items were not part of its original contents during Samuel’s time.

In Beth‑shemesh some of the people looked into the Ark of the Lord, an act that violated the command that the ark not be touched (see Numbers 4:15; Numbers 4:20; Deuteronomy 10:8). Their curiosity showed a lack of reverence for its holiness.

The consequence was severe. The text records that those who looked were smitten with leprosy, and God also “smote” the people who gazed upon the ark. Elsewhere in the account the death toll is given as fifty thousand and seventy men, indicating the great slaughter that followed the violation.

Lessons and Applications:

Reverence for God – The story reminds us of the importance of approaching God with awe, respect, and a proper understanding of His holiness.

Obedience to God’s Commands – Even seemingly minor infractions can have serious consequences; God’s instructions are given for our well‑being and to maintain a right relationship with Him.

The Holiness of God – The incident emphasizes that God’s presence is holy and must be honored; He is not to be taken lightly or treated casually.

God’s Justice and Judgment – The judgment upon the men of Beth‑shemesh demonstrates that God’s justice demands an account for disobedience and irreverence, urging us to live in obedience to His will and to fear Him.

In summary, the incident described in 1 Samuel 6:19 serves as a sobering reminder of the need for reverence, obedience, and recognition of God’s holiness. It teaches us to approach God with respect and to take His commands seriously.
