The book of 1 Samuel records Israel’s transition from the period of judges to the establishment of the monarchy under King Saul and later King David. This verse is part of the account of the return of the Ark of the Covenant to the Israelites by the Philistines.

In Beth‑shemesh some of the people looked into the Ark of the Lord, an act that violated the command that the ark not be touched (see Numbers 4:15; Numbers 4:20; Deuteronomy 10:8). Their curiosity showed a lack of reverence for its holiness.
The consequence was severe. The text records that those who looked were smitten with leprosy, and God also “smote” the people who gazed upon the ark. Elsewhere in the account the death toll is given as fifty thousand and seventy men, indicating the great slaughter that followed the violation.
