And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel, were restored to Israel, from Ekron euen vnto Gath, and the coasts thereof did Israel deliuer out of the hands of the Philistines: and there was peace betweene Israel and the Amorites. 1 Samuel 7:14 (KJV)

In 1 Samuel 7, after the Ark of the Covenant was returned to Israel following the Philistines’ capture of it (1 Samuel 5‑6), the Israelites experienced a period of divine deliverance. The historical context shows that the Philistines, afflicted by plagues wherever the Ark was kept, decided to return it to the Israelites, setting the stage for the events described in 1 Samuel 7. The chapter describes how Samuel led the people in repentance and prayer, resulting in God’s intervention against the Philistines during the battle at Mizpah (1 Samuel 7:5‑11). Following this victory, “the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel” (1 Samuel 7:13), and “the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines” (1 Samuel 7:14). “And there was peace between Israel and the Philistines.” This restoration of territory and peace reflected God’s faithfulness to His people when they turned to Him in obedience. The narrative emphasizes both divine intervention and the active participation of the Israelites in reclaiming their land, illustrating the balance between trusting in God’s power and taking faithful action. The passage emphasizes that Israel played an active role in reclaiming its land, working together with divine assistance. The chapter concludes with a period of relative calm for Israel after Samuel’s leadership and the nation’s repentance. The restoration of the cities and the deliverance from the Philistines highlight the importance of trusting in God’s deliverance in times of trouble. Believers are called to actively participate and cooperate with God’s plans, being proactive in faith and obedience, and to pursue peace, seeking harmony with others and fostering an environment of reconciliation.
