Now the Lord had told Samuel in his eare a day before Saul came, saying, 1 Samuel 9:15 (KJV)

1 Samuel 9 belongs to the historical narrative of the Old Testament, where Samuel is presented as the prophet and the last judge of Israel. This verse introduces a pivotal moment that prepares the nation for the establishment of its monarchy. The passage emphasizes that the Lord communicated directly to Samuel, highlighting a personal and intimate form of divine revelation. Such direct communication shows that God can convey His purposes to chosen servants in a straightforward manner.

The timing of the message is significant: the Lord informed Samuel a day before Saul’s arrival, revealing God’s foreknowledge and His ability to disclose future events to His messengers. By telling Samuel that a man from Benjamin would soon come, God ensured that Samuel was prepared for the encounter, demonstrating providential care and sovereign involvement in the affairs of His people.

This advance notice set the stage for the subsequent anointing of Saul as Israel’s first king (see 1 Samuel 10:1). Saul’s rise to power was part of God’s response to the people’s request for a monarch, a plan that would later transition to David. The verse therefore underscores God’s sovereignty, His active guidance, and the careful preparation that precedes major turning points in Israel’s history.

In summary, 1 Samuel 9:15 highlights the direct divine communication to Samuel, the foreknowledge of God regarding Saul’s imminent arrival, and the providential preparation that enabled the establishment of the monarchy. It serves as a clear illustration of God’s sovereign control and His intimate involvement in guiding the destiny of His people.
