1 Samuel Chapter 10

Summery

In 1 Samuel 10, the prophet Samuel anoints Saul as the first king of Israel. Samuel privately anoints Saul with oil and tells him that God has chosen him to rule over His people. As Saul leaves, various signs are fulfilled as foretold by Samuel. Saul encounters a group of prophets, and the Spirit of God comes upon him, causing him to prophesy alongside them.

Later, Samuel gathers all the tribes of Israel at Mizpah to announce the new king. The selection process involves casting lots, and the tribe of Benjamin is chosen, followed by the family of Matri, and eventually Saul is identified as the chosen one. However, Saul hides among the baggage, feeling unworthy of this great honor.

Samuel brings Saul before the people, and they witness his impressive physical stature. Samuel publicly declares Saul as the king, and the people celebrate. Samuel then delivers a speech, reminding the people of their history and warning them of the consequences of disobedience.

Afterward, Saul returns to his home in Gibeah, accompanied by valiant men whose hearts God has touched. However, some skeptics question Saul’s capabilities as a king. Despite the doubts, Saul remains silent.
