1 Samuel Chapter 7

Summery

1 Samuel 7 recounts the return of the Ark of the Covenant to Israel and the subsequent revival of the nation under the leadership of Samuel. After the Philistines had captured the Ark, it remained in their possession for several months, causing them trouble and afflictions. Eventually, they decided to send it back to Israel along with a guilt offering of golden mice and tumors.

The people of Israel, upon receiving the Ark, were overjoyed and gathered at Mizpah to seek the Lord. Samuel called them to repentance, urging them to put away their foreign gods and wholeheartedly devote themselves to the Lord. The Israelites followed Samuel’s instructions, and he offered sacrifices to God on their behalf.

Meanwhile, the Philistines gathered their forces to attack Israel, but the Lord intervened, causing a great thunderstorm that confused the enemy. The Israelites, emboldened by God’s intervention, pursued and defeated the Philistines, reclaiming the cities that had been taken from them.

To commemorate their victory, Samuel set up a stone called Ebenezer, which symbolized the help and faithfulness of the Lord. The Philistines were subdued and did not invade Israel’s territory again during Samuel’s lifetime. Samuel continued to serve as a judge and prophet over Israel, and the people enjoyed a period of peace and spiritual renewal.
