Listen to this article

But euen after that wee had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, wee were bold in our God, to speake vnto you the Gospel of God with much contention. 1 Thessalonians 2:2 (KJV)

Historical Context: The apostle Paul, accompanied by Silas, visited the city of Thessalonica during his second missionary journey (Acts 17:1-9). Paul and his companions faced opposition and persecution in Philippi before arriving in Thessalonica (Acts 16:16-40). This verse references their previous experiences in Philippi, where they were mistreated and shamefully treated.

Suffering and Shameful Treatment: Paul acknowledges that they had faced suffering and mistreatment in Philippi. This likely refers to their imprisonment and public beating they endured for the sake of the Gospel. Despite these difficult circumstances, Paul and his companions remained steadfast in their faith.

Boldness in God: Despite their sufferings, Paul emphasizes that they were bold in their God. This boldness comes from their unwavering trust in God’s strength and provision. It is through God’s empowerment that they were able to persevere and continue their mission of sharing the gospel.

Proclaiming the Gospel: The primary purpose of Paul’s visit to Thessalonica was to share the gospel with the people. Despite the challenges they faced, Paul and his companions were determined to proclaim the message of salvation to the Thessalonians.

Much Contention: The phrase “with much contention” refers to the intensity of their preaching and the opposition they encountered. The preaching of the gospel often stirred up controversy and resistance from those who opposed it. Paul and his companions faced various forms of opposition and hostility, but they remained steadfast in their commitment to share the gospel.

Overall, 1 Thessalonians 2:2 highlights the hardships and challenges that Paul and his companions faced in their mission to spread the gospel. It also emphasises their boldness in God and their unwavering commitment to proclaiming the message of salvation, despite facing opposition and mistreatment. This verse serves as an encouragement for believers to remain steadfast in their faith and continue sharing the gospel, even in the face of adversity.
