1 Thessalonians 5:13

And to esteeme them very highly in loue for their workes sake, and be at peace among your selues. 1 Thessalonians 5:13 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the church in Thessalonica to encourage and instruct believers in their daily walk with Christ. In chapter five he addresses practical aspects of Christian living, including how believers should regard their leaders and relate to one another.

Recognizing Leaders

Paul urges the Thessalonians to recognize and esteem their leaders. Because leaders labor for the sake of the church, they deserve high regard. This respect is not merely a formal acknowledgment but a heartfelt appreciation for the work they do in guiding the community of believers.

Esteem in Love

The esteem called for in this verse must be expressed in love. Paul emphasizes that genuine love should be the motivating factor behind our honor toward those who serve. When love undergirds our respect, it moves beyond duty to a sincere appreciation of the character and contributions of our leaders and fellow believers.

Peace Among Yourselves

Paul also calls the congregation to live in peace with one another. The appeal to peace suggests that discord may have arisen, and believers are reminded to pursue unity, resolve conflicts, and maintain a harmonious fellowship. A peaceful community reflects the kingdom values that Christ models.

Further Study

To deepen understanding, read the surrounding verses (1 Thessalonians 5:12‑28) which expand on the themes of respect, love, and peace. Complementary passages include Romans 12:9‑13, Hebrews 13:17, and Ephesians 4:3, all of which reinforce the importance of sincere love, mutual honor, and unity within the body of Christ.

Application

Take time to meditate on these teachings, asking God to cultivate in you a genuine love that honors those who lead and a spirit that seeks peace with all believers. Let the principles discovered shape your attitudes, actions, and relationships within the church, fostering a community that truly esteems one another in love and lives in harmonious peace.
