2 Chronicles 1:10

Posted on 18 May at 11:36

“Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?”

In this verse, we find Solomon, the newly anointed king of Israel, standing before the altar of the Lord at Gibeon. This was a significant moment because God appeared to Solomon in a dream and said, “Ask what I shall give thee” (2 Chronicles 1:7, KJV). Solomon recognised the weight of his responsibility as the leader of God’s people and understood the need for divine guidance.

Let’s break down the verse and explore its key themes and lessons:

Recognition of Dependence:Solomon begins his request by acknowledging his need for wisdom and knowledge. Despite his position of authority, he recognises that he cannot effectively lead God’s people without God’s guidance. This humbling acknowledgment teaches us the importance of recognising our dependence on God in all aspects of life.

The Value of Wisdom:Solomon’s desire for wisdom reveals his understanding of its immense value. Wisdom is more than mere knowledge; it is the ability to apply knowledge skillfully and discerningly. Solomon knew that with wisdom, he would be able to make sound judgments and lead the people of Israel effectively. This verse highlights the importance of seeking wisdom from God rather than relying solely on human understanding.

Going Out and Coming In:Solomon asks for wisdom and knowledge so that he can “go out and come in before this people.” This phrase refers to his role as a leader who interacts with the people on a daily basis. Solomon wanted wisdom to guide him in all his actions and decisions as he led and governed the nation. It emphasises the need for godly wisdom not only in prominent decisions but also in the everyday aspects of life and leadership.

The Greatness of God’s People:Solomon acknowledges the greatness of the people he is called to lead. Israel was a nation chosen by God, and their significance and responsibilities were immense. Recognising the magnitude of the task at hand, Solomon realises that only God, with His infinite wisdom, can enable him to judge and lead such a great people effectively.

Lessons for us today:

  • Dependence on God:Just as Solomon recognised his dependence on God, we should humbly acknowledge our need for God’s guidance and wisdom in all aspects of our lives. By seeking God’s wisdom, we can navigate the complexities of life with discernment and make wise choices.
  • The Value of Wisdom:Wisdom should be highly prized in our lives. It is not just an accumulation of knowledge but the application of that knowledge in a way that aligns with God’s truth. As we seek wisdom, we gain the ability to make godly decisions and live a life that honours Him.
  • Leadership and Influence:Whether in positions of authority or in our daily interactions, we can apply Solomon’s prayer to our roles and relationships. By seeking wisdom, we can be effective leaders and influencers, making a positive impact on those around us.
  • Recognising God’s People:We should recognise the value and significance of those around us, treating them with respect, love, and care. Just as Solomon acknowledged the greatness of God’s people, we can appreciate the unique qualities and contributions of others, fostering unity and a sense of community.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 1:10 teaches us about the importance of seeking wisdom from God, recognising our dependence on Him, and applying wisdom in our leadership and interactions. May we follow Solomon’s example and earnestly seek wisdom to navigate the challenges and responsibilities we face in life.
