2 Chronicles 10:12

Posted on 18 May at 11:36

So Ieroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the King bade, saying, Come againe to me on the third day. 2 Chronicles 10:12 (KJV)

Context: 2 Chronicles 10:12 is part of the account of the division of the kingdom of Israel after the reign of King Solomon. Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, had become the king of Judah, while Jeroboam would later become the king of the northern kingdom, known as Israel. The verse takes place during a meeting between Rehoboam and Jeroboam, where Jeroboam and the people presented their grievances and asked Rehoboam for relief from the heavy burdens imposed during Solomon’s reign.

Timing and setting: The verse mentions that Jeroboam and the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, referring to the third day after the people had requested Rehoboam to lighten their burdens (2 Chronicles 10:3). The meeting took place in Shechem, a city in the northern kingdom of Israel.

Rehoboam’s command: Rehoboam had asked Jeroboam and the people to return to him on the third day. This indicates that Rehoboam took some time to consider their request rather than providing an immediate response, showing a desire to deliberate before giving an answer.

Rehoboam’s response: In the subsequent verses Rehoboam sought counsel from the elders who had served under his father Solomon, but he ignored their advice and followed the counsel of his younger peers instead. This decision ultimately led to the division of the kingdom, as the people of Israel revolted against Rehoboam’s rule (2 Chronicles 10:16‑19).

Spiritual lessons from 2 Chronicles 10:12:

The value of wise counsel – Rehoboam’s rejection of the experienced elders and his reliance on misguided advice highlights the importance of surrounding ourselves with godly and wise individuals who can provide biblical guidance in important decisions.

The danger of pride and arrogance – Rehoboam’s pride and harsh response reflected a lack of humility and concern for the welfare of those under his authority, reminding believers to lead with humility and a servant’s heart.

The consequences of hasty decisions – Rehoboam’s impulsive response after a brief deliberation led to the revolt of the ten northern tribes, teaching the need for patience, prayerful reflection, and trusted advisors before making choices that have far‑reaching effects.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 10:12 offers insight into the events leading to the division of Israel and underscores the significance of wise counsel, humility, and careful decision‑making. It encourages believers to seek God’s wisdom and guidance, recognizing the potential impact of our choices on ourselves and others.
