2 Chronicles 11:23

Posted on 18 May at 11:36

“And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countries of Judah and Benjamin, unto every fenced city: and he gave them victual in abundance. And he desired many wives.”

Context:The verse is part of a passage that describes the reign of King Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, over the divided kingdom of Israel. After Solomon’s death, the kingdom was split into two: the northern kingdom of Israel, consisting of ten tribes, and the southern kingdom of Judah, consisting of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin.

Wise Administration:In this verse, it is mentioned that King Rehoboam “dealt wisely” by dispersing his children throughout the fortified cities of Judah and Benjamin. This was a strategic move to ensure stability and control over his kingdom. By placing his children in key locations, he established a network of support and influence.

Provision and Protection:The verse also highlights that King Rehoboam provided abundant provisions (victuals) for his children. This demonstrates his desire to take care of his offspring and ensure their well-being. Moreover, by placing them in fortified cities, he sought to protect them from potential threats and conflicts that could arise.

Polygamy:The verse ends by mentioning that King Rehoboam desired many wives. This reflects a departure from God’s original plan for marriage, as stated in Genesis 2:24, where it is declared that a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. Rehoboam’s desire for multiple wives was a violation of this principle and would ultimately lead to complications and problems in his life.

  • Wise leadership:King Rehoboam’s strategic decision to disperse his children and provide for them offers a lesson in wise administration and planning. Leaders today can learn from his example by considering how to delegate responsibilities and ensure the well-being of their families or those under their care.
  • God’s design for marriage:Rehoboam’s pursuit of many wives serves as a cautionary tale. It highlights the importance of honoring God’s plan for marriage, which involves a lifelong commitment between one man and one woman. Christians are called to follow God’s design for relationships and avoid practices that deviate from His will.
