2 Chronicles 11:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:36

“Thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house: for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the Lord, and returned from going against Jeroboam.”

This verse is a part of the historical account of the reign of Rehoboam, the son of Solomon and grandson of David. After Solomon’s death, the kingdom of Israel was divided into two: the northern kingdom, called Israel, and the southern kingdom, known as Judah. Rehoboam ruled over Judah. In this particular verse, the Lord speaks to Rehoboam and his people, instructing them not to go up and fight against their brethren in the northern kingdom. This instruction from God is crucial to understand the context and the underlying message.

God’s sovereignty: The verse begins with “Thus saith the Lord.” It emphasises the divine authority and sovereignty of God. He is the one speaking, and His words carry weight and significance. As the Creator and Ruler of all things, God has the ultimate authority over the affairs of nations and individuals.

Fraternal conflict: The verse speaks of the potential conflict between the kingdom of Judah (led by Rehoboam) and the kingdom of Israel (led by Jeroboam). Despite being brethren, their political differences and ambitions could have led to a destructive war. However, God intervenes to prevent unnecessary bloodshed among His chosen people.

God’s intervention and guidance: God explicitly declares that the situation has occurred according to His divine plan. He instructs the people of Judah to return to their homes and not fight against their brethren. This demonstrates God’s desire for peace and unity among His people. It also shows His ability to intervene in human affairs and guide the course of events.

God’s word: The verse concludes by highlighting the people’s response to God’s command. It states, “And they obeyed the words of the Lord, and returned from going against Jeroboam.” This obedience reflects the faith and trust of the people in God’s wisdom and guidance. It also demonstrates the importance of heeding God’s instructions and aligning our actions with His will.

Lessons we can learn from this verse:

  • Pursuit of peace:God desires His people to live in harmony and peace. It is essential for us to seek peaceful resolutions to conflicts, avoiding unnecessary strife and division.
  • Trust in God’s plan:Even in challenging situations or conflicts, we should trust in God’s sovereignty. He is ultimately in control and can work all things together for good.
  • Obedience to God’s word:Just as the people of Judah obeyed God’s command, we should strive to align our actions with God’s instructions as revealed in the Bible. Obedience is an expression of faith and trust in God’s wisdom.
  • Unity among believers:The concept of brethren in this verse emphasises the importance of unity within the community of believers. We should strive to maintain unity, love, and mutual respect among fellow believers, even in times of disagreement or differing opinions.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 11:4 reminds us of God’s sovereignty, His desire for peace, and the importance of obedience to His word. It offers valuable insights that can guide our attitudes and actions as we navigate conflicts and relationships in our own lives.
