2 Chronicles 13:18

Posted on 18 May at 11:36

Thus the children of Israel were brought vnder at that time, and the children of Iudah preuailed, because they relied vpon the Lord God of their fathers. 2 Chronicles 13:18 (KJV)

Historical Context: 2 Chronicles 13 recounts the battle between Abijah, the king of Judah, and Jeroboam, the king of Israel. This conflict occurred shortly after the kingdom of Israel had split into two separate kingdoms: the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. Abijah, the son of Rehoboam, ruled over Judah while Jeroboam ruled over Israel. The battle took place because Jeroboam had rebelled against the house of David and established a separate kingdom.

The Divided Kingdom: After the death of King Solomon, the united kingdom of Israel was divided. The northern kingdom, called Israel, consisted of ten tribes, while the southern kingdom, called Judah, consisted of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin. The division was a result of Solomon’s idolatry and oppression, which led to God’s judgment on the nation and set the stage for ongoing conflicts between the two kingdoms.

Abijah’s Faith and Trust in God: In the battle described in 2 Chronicles 13, Abijah led the army of Judah against Jeroboam’s forces, which greatly outnumbered his own. Despite being outnumbered, Abijah demonstrated his faith in the Lord God of his fathers. He relied on God’s promises and covenant with the descendants of David, knowing that the victory ultimately depended on God’s favour.

Reliance on God: The key message in this verse is the importance of relying on the Lord in times of conflict and difficulty. The children of Judah prevailed because they put their trust in God, not because of their own strength or military strategy, but because of their faith in the Almighty God.

Trusting in God’s Promises: Just as Abijah trusted in God’s promises and covenant, we are called to trust in God’s faithfulness and the promises revealed in Scripture. When facing challenges or battles in life, we can rely on God’s strength and guidance.

Seeking God’s Wisdom: Instead of relying solely on our own understanding, we should seek God’s wisdom and guidance in every situation. Proverbs 3:5‑6 encourages us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding.

Dependence on God’s Power: Recognise that true victory comes from God’s power, not our own abilities. In spiritual battles or challenges we face, we must rely on the strength of the Holy Spirit and allow God to work in and through us.

Unity among God’s People: The children of Judah experienced victory because they were united in their trust in God. Likewise, unity among believers is crucial for spiritual success. We should strive for unity and cooperation with fellow believers, regardless of our differences, as we pursue God’s purposes together.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 13:18 highlights the importance of relying on the Lord and His strength rather than our own abilities. It reminds us that true victory comes through trusting in God’s promises, seeking His wisdom, and depending on His power. May we learn from the example of the children of Judah and put our faith in the Lord God of our fathers.
