2 Chronicles 13:21

Posted on 18 May at 11:36

“But Abijah waxed mighty, and married fourteen wives, and begat twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters.”

Context: 2 Chronicles 13 records the reign of Abijah (also known as Abijam), who was the son of Rehoboam and the grandson of Solomon. Abijah became the king of Judah after the kingdom was divided into Israel and Judah. He reigned for three years in Jerusalem.

Explanation: In this verse, we learn about Abijah’s personal life and family. It states that Abijah became mighty, which suggests that he was a powerful and influential king. It then mentions that he had fourteen wives, which was not in line with God’s ideal plan for marriage, as God intended for one man to be united with one woman in a lifelong covenant (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:4-6). The verse goes on to say that Abijah had twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters. The mention of his numerous offspring indicates that he had a large family and a prosperous dynasty. However, it’s important to note that the Bible’s inclusion of these details doesn’t necessarily imply divine approval or endorsement of Abijah’s actions.

  • The Consequences of Disobedience: Abijah’s practice of marrying multiple wives goes against God’s design for marriage. This serves as a reminder that disobedience to God’s commands often leads to negative consequences. God’s intention for marriage is a monogamous relationship based on love, faithfulness, and commitment.
  • Human Failings and God’s Faithfulness: Abijah’s polygamous lifestyle highlights the human flaws and weaknesses found even in those considered righteous or powerful. It demonstrates that even godly individuals can fall short of God’s standards. However, it is essential to remember that God remains faithful to His people, despite their shortcomings.
  • God’s Sovereignty over Human Choices: Although Abijah made choices contrary to God’s plan, the verse focuses on the outcomes rather than passing moral judgment. This emphasizes God’s sovereignty in the midst of human decisions, as He can work through flawed individuals to accomplish His purposes.
  • The Importance of Studying the Bible in Context: Understanding the historical and cultural context of a passage is crucial for interpreting and applying the Scriptures accurately. This verse, within the larger narrative of Abijah’s reign, provides insight into his personal life and the circumstances of his time.

Overall, this verse serves as a reminder that the Bible faithfully records both the triumphs and failures of its characters, allowing us to learn from their experiences and seek God’s guidance in our own lives.
