2 Chronicles 14:1

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.”

Context:To gain a better understanding of 2 Chronicles 14:1, it is important to consider the context of the verse. The book of 2 Chronicles is a historical account of the kings of Judah, focusing on their reigns, accomplishments, and their relationship with God. This verse marks a transition in kingship, with Abijah passing away and his son Asa ascending to the throne.

Abijah and Asa:Abijah was the son of Rehoboam and the grandson of Solomon. He became the king of Judah after his father’s death. However, his reign was marked by conflict with the northern kingdom of Israel and he died after a relatively short rule. Asa, his son, succeeded him as king. Asa is known for his reforms and his commitment to seeking the Lord. He is often regarded as one of the godly kings in Judah’s history.

Succession and Burial:The verse begins by stating that Abijah “slept with his fathers.” This phrase is a euphemism for death, indicating that Abijah passed away and joined his ancestors in the afterlife. The mention of burying him in the city of David signifies the royal burial tradition. The city of David refers to Jerusalem, specifically the area associated with King David. It highlights the importance and honor given to the deceased king.

Asa’s Reign:The verse goes on to say that Asa, Abijah’s son, took over as king after his father’s death. During Asa’s reign, the land enjoyed a period of tranquility for ten years. This period of peace is significant as it allowed Asa to focus on implementing reforms, strengthening the kingdom, and seeking the Lord.

The Importance of Peace:The mention of ten years of peace highlights the importance of a peaceful and stable environment. It provided Asa with an opportunity to establish good governance, strengthen the kingdom’s defenses, and promote the worship of God. The absence of external conflicts allowed the nation to flourish and prosper under Asa’s leadership.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 14:1 sets the stage for the reign of King Asa, highlighting the transition of power from Abijah to his son. It underscores the significance of a peaceful period in the nation’s history, enabling Asa to carry out reforms and govern the kingdom effectively.
