2 Chronicles 14:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“And commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.”

In this verse, we find King Asa of Judah taking action to lead his kingdom in seeking the Lord God of their fathers and obeying His commandments. Let’s explore the context and significance of this verse within the broader narrative of 2 Chronicles 14.

Chapter 14 of 2 Chronicles begins with the reign of King Asa, who succeeded his father, Abijah, as the ruler of Judah. The early part of Asa’s reign was marked by peace and prosperity. Verse 2 states that “Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God.” He sought to lead his people in obedience to God’s laws and commandments.

Verse 3 describes some of the actions taken by King Asa to achieve this objective. He removed foreign altars and high places and broke down sacred pillars and Asherim (symbols of idol worship). This demonstrates Asa’s commitment to purify the worship of God in Judah and eliminate idolatry.

In verse 4, Asa commands the people of Judah to seek the Lord God of their fathers and to follow His law and commandments. This directive emphasizes the importance of actively pursuing a relationship with God and living according to His revealed will. Asa recognizes that obedience to God’s commands is central to the covenant relationship between God and His people.

The phrase “seek the LORD God of their fathers” carries a deep significance. It reminds the people of Judah of their ancestral heritage and the faithfulness of God throughout their history. It calls them to emulate the faith of their forefathers and to seek a personal and intimate relationship with God.

Furthermore, the phrase “do the law and the commandment” underscores the importance of obedience. Asa understood that simply seeking God without following His commandments would be insufficient. Genuine seeking of God involves both a heart of devotion and a life of obedience.

As believers today, we can draw valuable lessons from this verse. It reminds us of the need to actively pursue a relationship with God, seeking Him with our whole hearts. We are also called to obedience, diligently following His commandments and aligning our lives with His revealed will. Like Asa, we should be zealous in removing any idols or sinful practices that hinder our devotion to God.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 14:4 showcases King Asa’s leadership in commanding Judah to seek the Lord God and obey His law and commandments. It highlights the importance of actively pursuing a relationship with God and living in obedience to His will. This verse serves as a timeless reminder for us to seek God wholeheartedly and to faithfully follow His commands.
