2 Chronicles 15:7

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded.”

Context:The book of 2 Chronicles is a historical account of the kings of Judah, focusing primarily on the southern kingdom after the division of Israel. This verse is part of a message delivered by the prophet Azariah to King Asa, urging him to seek the Lord and His blessings.

Historical Background:At the time of this verse, King Asa was ruling over Judah. He had instituted religious reforms, removing idols and altars to foreign gods from the land, and commanded the people to seek the Lord. However, there were still pockets of idolatry and wickedness present. Azariah’s message was meant to encourage and strengthen Asa’s resolve to follow God wholeheartedly.

Be Strong:The phrase “Be ye strong” is a call to courage and steadfastness. It implies that challenges and opposition may arise, but believers are called to stand firm in their faith and commitment to God. In this context, it refers to remaining faithful to God’s commandments despite the presence of idolatry and other temptations.

Let Not Your Hands Be Weak:This phrase speaks of perseverance and determination. It encourages believers not to grow weary or lose heart in their efforts to serve God faithfully. It’s a reminder that the work of the Lord requires continuous dedication and diligence.

The Promise of Reward:The verse concludes with the assurance that the work of the faithful will be rewarded. God sees the efforts of His people and promises to bless and reward them accordingly. This reward may come in various forms, as spiritual growth, answered prayers, blessings in relationships, or blessings in their endeavours.

Application to Believers:While this verse was originally addressed to King Asa and the people of Judah, its principles can be applied to believers today. Christians are called to remain strong in their faith, to persevere in doing good, and to trust that their labour for the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). We are encouraged to stay faithful, even in the face of challenges and opposition, knowing that God rewards those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).
