2 Chronicles 16:14

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“And they buried him in his own sepulchres, which he had made for himself in the city of David, and laid him in the bed which was filled with sweet odours and divers kinds of spices prepared by the apothecaries’ art: and they made a very great burning for him.”

Context:This verse is part of the historical account of the life of King Asa of Judah. Asa was the third king of the southern kingdom of Judah, following the split of Israel into two kingdoms. He reigned for 41 years and was generally regarded as a good king who sought to honor God. However, towards the end of his reign, he made a significant mistake by seeking help from a foreign king instead of trusting in God. As a result, he faced rebuke from a prophet named Hanani.

Verse Analysis:

Burial in His Own Sepulchres:The verse begins by mentioning that Asa was buried in his own sepulchres. This highlights the fact that Asa had prepared his own burial places, possibly as a sign of his wealth and influence. It was common for kings and wealthy individuals to have elaborate tombs or sepulchres constructed for their burial.

Filled with Sweet Odours and Divers Kinds of Spices:Asa’s sepulchre was filled with sweet odors and various kinds of spices. This indicates that the burial chamber was prepared with aromatic substances to counteract the natural odor of decay and preserve the body.

Prepared by the Apothecaries’ Art:The spices and sweet odors were prepared by the apothecaries’ art, suggesting that skilled artisans or experts were involved in the preparation. This emphasizes the care and attention given to Asa’s burial, reflecting his status as a king.

Very Great Burning:The verse concludes by stating that a very great burning was made for Asa. This likely refers to the burning of various offerings or funeral pyres as part of the burial ritual. The burning may have been accompanied by elaborate ceremonies and mourning by the people.

Human Mortality:Asa’s death and burial remind us of the brevity of human life. No matter how wealthy or influential we may be, death is an inevitable reality. It encourages us to reflect on the temporary nature of our earthly existence and consider the eternal significance of our souls.

God’s Sovereignty:Asa’s burial preparations were impressive, but ultimately they could not save him from death. This reminds us that our trust should not be in material wealth or human accomplishments, but in God alone. Only God has power over life and death, and we should place our faith in Him.

The Importance of Spiritual Preparation:Asa’s elaborate burial preparations serve as a reminder that we need to focus on preparing ourselves spiritually for eternity. It is not the grandeur of our earthly tombs or ceremonies that matters, but rather the state of our hearts and our relationship with God. We should prioritize spiritual growth, repentance, and seeking a personal connection with the Lord.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 16:14 recounts the burial of King Asa and the elaborate preparations made for his burial. While it primarily describes a historical event, we can glean spiritual lessons from it, including the brevity of human life, the sovereignty of God, and the importance of spiritual preparation.
