2 Chronicles 16:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“Then Asa brought out silver and gold out of the treasures of the house of the Lord and of the king’s house and sent to Benhadad king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus, saying,”

Historical Background: The verse is part of the narrative about King Asa of Judah. Asa was a righteous king who sought to reform and strengthen the kingdom of Judah. In the earlier years of his reign, he experienced military victories and witnessed the favour of God. However, as time passed, he faced a significant test of his trust in God.

The Context: Prior to this verse, King Baasha of Israel had started building a fortification to prevent trade and communication between Judah and Israel. Instead of seeking God’s guidance and relying on Him, Asa turned to the king of Syria, Benhadad, for help. Asa sent him a message with silver and gold from the treasuries of the house of the Lord and the king’s house, asking for a treaty and alliance against Israel.

A Lack of Trust in God: Asa’s decision to rely on a foreign king rather than trusting in God revealed a lack of faith and a departure from his earlier commitment to God. Throughout his reign, Asa had experienced God’s faithfulness and deliverance, but now he sought human alliances instead of seeking God’s help. This decision showed a decline in his spiritual walk and a reliance on worldly resources.

The Consequence: Though Benhadad agreed to Asa’s request and attacked Israel, the prophet Hanani confronted Asa, saying that he had acted foolishly and had not relied on the Lord, who had proven Himself faithful in the past. Hanani prophesied that because of his lack of trust, Asa would face ongoing wars.

Lessons for Us: Asa’s actions serve as a cautionary tale for believers today. We are reminded of the importance of trusting in God completely, especially during challenging situations. Asa’s initial trust in God had brought him victory, but when faced with a new threat, he leaned on his own understanding and human resources. We are called to place our trust in God alone, seeking His guidance and relying on His provision rather than relying on worldly solutions.

Application: When we face trials or challenges, it is vital to seek God’s wisdom, guidance, and strength. We should be careful not to place our trust in worldly alliances, human wisdom, or material resources alone. Instead, we should turn to God in prayer, study His Word, and seek His will in all circumstances. Trusting in God wholeheartedly leads to His provision, protection, and guidance.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 16:2 reminds us of the importance of placing our trust in God alone, rather than relying on worldly resources or human alliances. Asa’s decision to seek help from the king of Syria instead of seeking God’s guidance led to consequences for himself and his kingdom. May we learn from his example and always rely on God in every aspect of our lives.
