2 Chronicles 16:5

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“And it came to pass, when Baasha heard it, that he left off building of Ramah, and let his work cease.”

Historical context: This verse is part of the historical account of the reign of King Asa of Judah. Asa was a righteous king who sought to remove idolatry from the land and restore the worship of God. The verse specifically mentions Baasha, who was the king of Israel (the northern kingdom) during this time. Baasha was planning to fortify the city of Ramah, which was located near the border of Judah and Israel.

Baasha’s intention: Baasha’s plan to build and fortify Ramah was likely motivated by his desire to control and restrict the movement of the people of Judah. By establishing a strong military presence near the border, he hoped to intimidate and assert his authority over Judah. This action by Baasha posed a threat to the security and autonomy of the southern kingdom of Judah.

Asa’s response: Upon hearing about Baasha’s intentions, King Asa took decisive action. He didn’t rely on his own strength or resources but sought the help of Benhadad, the king of Syria. Asa made a treaty with Benhadad, asking him to break his alliance with Baasha and attack Israel from the north. In return, Asa offered silver and gold from the treasuries of the temple and the royal palace.

Consequences of Asa’s actions: Asa’s decision to rely on a foreign king instead of trusting in God’s protection was not in line with God’s will. As a result of this alliance, God sent Hanani the seer to rebuke Asa. Hanani reminded Asa that in the past, God had given him victory over the Ethiopian army when he relied on God alone. Hanani pointed out that Asa’s actions demonstrated a lack of faith in God’s ability to deliver him from his enemies.

Lessons we can learn:

  • Trust in God’s provision: Asa’s mistake was seeking help from a foreign king instead of trusting in God. We should always remember to seek God’s guidance and provision in every situation we face. God is our ultimate source of strength and protection.
  • Faithfulness in times of testing: Asa had demonstrated great faithfulness in removing idolatry and restoring worship to God earlier in his reign. However, when faced with a military threat, he faltered and turned to his own devices. It is essential for us to remain faithful to God, even in challenging circumstances.
  • God’s desire for wholehearted devotion: God desires that we trust Him fully and seek His guidance in all aspects of our lives. Asa’s alliance with a foreign king demonstrated a lack of complete trust in God. Let us strive to give our wholehearted devotion to God, relying on Him in all situations.
