2 Chronicles 17:10

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

And the feare of the Lord fell vpon all the kingdomes of the lands that were round about Iudah, so that they made no warre against Iehoshaphat. 2 Chronicles 17:10 (KJV)

This verse concludes a passage that records the reign of King Jehoshaphat, the fourth king of Judah after the nation’s division. Jehoshaphat is noted for his devotion to the ways of the Lord and his vigorous effort to bring spiritual reform to Judah.

In the early part of his reign, verse 3 tells us that Jehoshaphat walked in the ways of his father Asa, a righteous king. He began by sending teachers throughout Judah and by appointing officials and judges over the land, establishing a foundation of godly instruction and just governance.

Verse 4 reveals that Jehoshaphat’s heart was devoted to seeking God and obeying His commandments. He removed the high places and idolatrous images from Judah, purifying worship and restoring true reverence for Yahweh.

Because of this steadfast commitment, verse 10 records that the fear of the Lord fell upon the surrounding kingdoms. The neighboring nations, recognizing God’s power, refrained from making war against Jehoshaphat and Judah, granting the kingdom a period of peace and security.

The passage highlights a timeless principle: when God’s people honor and seek Him, He can grant favor and protection even amid potential enemies. By prioritising worship of the true God and eliminating idolatry, Jehoshaphat demonstrated trust in the Lord’s provision and defense.

The “fear of the Lord” here is not a mere terror but an awe‑inspiring reverence for God’s sovereignty. Such recognition can shape the attitudes and actions of surrounding peoples toward God’s people.

In a broader sense, the verse teaches the importance of honoring God in every area of life. When we align our hearts and actions with His will, we can experience His blessings, protection, and peace. Jehoshaphat’s faithfulness produced tangible peace for his nation, and our own faithfulness can have far‑reaching effects for ourselves and those around us.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 17:10 reminds us of the significance of seeking and fearing the Lord. It encourages us to prioritize our relationship with God, trusting in His provision and protection, and to know that He can bring peace even in the midst of challenging circumstances.
