2 Chronicles 18:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

And the king sayd to him, Howe many times shall I adiure thee, that thou say nothing but the truth to me, in the name of the Lord? 2 Chronicles 18:15 (KJV)

The passage is set within the historical narrative of the kings of Israel and Judah. 2 Chronicles gives a broad overview of Judah’s monarchs, their religious reforms, and their relationship with God, while 1 Kings records the same joint military plans of King Ahab of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah concerning a campaign against Ramoth‑Gilead. The specific adjuration spoken by the king is recorded in 1 Kings 22:7, though it is quoted here in the context of 2 Chronicles 18.

In the verse, King Ahab adjures King Jehoshaphat, demanding that he speak only the truth in the name of the LORD. The wording indicates that Ahab had previously encountered prophetic messages he did not wish to hear, and now he seeks an unequivocal, honest revelation before proceeding with the battle. Although the prophet Micaiah is introduced later in the narrative, the immediate request is directed toward Jehoshaphat, underscoring the king’s urgency for truthful counsel.

Ahab’s forceful demand highlights the critical need for honest divine guidance. By insisting that Jehoshaphat speak truthfully, the king acknowledges that reliable revelation—rather than flattering predictions—is essential for sound decision‑making. The importance of truth in seeking God’s will is therefore foregrounded.

Jehoshaphat’s willingness to consult a true prophet reflects his desire to align the kingdom’s actions with God’s will. He recognizes the authority of a genuine prophetic message and seeks to avoid reliance on human wisdom alone. This attitude reminds believers to prioritize God’s truth above personal preferences.

Application for today is clear: believers should seek the truth of God’s Word in every aspect of life, listening to His voice even when it contradicts personal desires or popular opinion. Such listening requires humility, discernment, and a readiness to align one’s life with God’s revealed will.

The interaction between Ahab, Jehoshaphat, and the various seers also raises the challenge of distinguishing true prophets from false ones. Ahab was accustomed to prophets who delivered favorable reports, whereas Micaiah consistently conveyed God’s unvarnished message. This passage urges us to test spirits and verify prophetic claims against Scripture, ensuring we follow those who faithfully represent God’s Word.

Finally, the passage encourages a continual seeking of God’s will in all decisions. As the kings turned to prophetic counsel, believers are called to pursue guidance through prayer, diligent study of Scripture, and wise, godly counsel. Trusting in the Lord and His truth equips us to navigate life’s challenges and make decisions that honor Him.
