2 Chronicles 18:23

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and smote Micaiah upon the cheek, and said, Which way went the Spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee?”

This verse is part of a larger narrative found in 2 Chronicles 18, which recounts the events surrounding the alliance between Ahab, the king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah. They had decided to go to war against Ramoth‑gilead, and Ahab sought the advice of his prophets regarding the outcome of the battle. Micaiah, a prophet of the Lord, was called to give his prophecy before the kings. However, the preceding verses indicate that the prophets of Ahab had given him false assurances of victory. Jehoshaphat insisted on hearing from a true prophet of the Lord, and Ahab reluctantly called for Micaiah.

In verse 23, we see the reaction of one of the false prophets, Zedekiah. He approached Micaiah and struck him on the cheek, questioning how the Spirit of the Lord had spoken to Micaiah when it had apparently departed from him. Zedekiah’s action of striking Micaiah demonstrated his contempt and disbelief towards Micaiah’s prophetic message.

This verse serves as a stark contrast between the true prophet, Micaiah, and the false prophets who were driven by their desire to please the king rather than speak the truth. Zedekiah’s action reflects the hostility faced by prophets who were faithful to God’s message but contradicted the popular opinion or desires of the people or rulers.

From this passage, we can draw a few key lessons: Faithfulness to God’s Word: Micaiah stood firm in his role as a prophet, even when it meant delivering an unpopular message. As followers of God, we are called to be faithful to His Word and speak the truth, even in the face of opposition or persecution. Discernment of False Prophets: The presence of false prophets in this story reminds us to exercise discernment when it comes to spiritual guidance. We should test the messages we hear against the teachings of the Bible and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Consequences of Rejecting God’s Word: The actions of Zedekiah and the false prophets highlight the danger of rejecting God’s Word. By rejecting Micaiah’s prophecy, they were also rejecting the message of God. Similarly, when we choose to disregard or disobey God’s Word, we place ourselves at risk of negative consequences and spiritual deception.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 18:23 serves as a reminder of the importance of faithfulness to God’s Word, discernment in identifying false prophets, and the potential consequences of rejecting God’s truth.
