2 Chronicles 18:4

And Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel, Enquire, I pray thee, at the word of the Lord to day.

2 Chronicles 18:4 (KJV)

King Jehoshaphat of Judah visits King Ahab of Israel in Samaria. Ahab proposes war against Ramoth-gilead, and Jehoshaphat agrees to join him (2 Chronicles 18:3). Yet even after agreeing, Jehoshaphat asks that they first seek the Lord’s word. This shows his reverence, especially when compared with Ahab, whose reign was marked by idolatry and disobedience.

Jehoshaphat’s request, “Enquire, I pray thee, at the word of the Lord to day,” is a formal appeal for prophetic revelation. He does not rely on his own judgment or on Ahab’s confidence. Instead, he insists that divine counsel must guide their decision. The phrase “inquire at the word of the Lord” means consulting a prophet or seeking direct revelation, a practice that reflects humility and dependence on God’s wisdom.

The parallel account in 1 Kings 22:5 records the same request, confirming the event’s historical reliability. Later in this chapter, Ahab gathers prophets who give favorable but false assurances, while Micaiah alone speaks the truth. This contrast warns that not every voice claiming divine authority is trustworthy. Believers must test all messages against God’s Word.

For believers today, this verse teaches a timeless principle: seek God’s guidance before every major decision. Prayer, Scripture study, and wise counsel from fellow believers are essential. Our limited understanding is complemented by God’s perfect wisdom, which surpasses all human insight. Even when a course seems clear, as it did to Ahab, we must still ask the Lord.

Jehoshaphat’s example also highlights the need for discernment. He had already agreed to the alliance, yet he still sought the Lord. This shows that it is never too late to ask for divine direction. A genuine, humble inquiry into God’s word protects us from relying on human counsel alone and keeps our steps aligned with His will.
