2 Chronicles 18:6

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

But Iehoshaphat saide, Is there not here a Prophet of the Lord besides, that we might enquire of him? 2 Chronicles 18:6 (KJV)

But Jehoshaphat said,

Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might enquire of him? 2 Chronicles 18:6 (KJV)

In this verse Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah, asks whether a prophet of the LORD is present who can give guidance before he joins Ahab, king of Israel, in the campaign against Ramoth‑Gilead, a Syrian‑held city. Ahab had invited Jehoshaphat to share in the battle, and Jehoshaphat wisely seeks prophetic counsel before deciding.

Lesson 1: Seeking Divine Counsel

The passage highlights the importance of seeking God’s counsel before making significant decisions. Jehoshaphat, a righteous king, recognized the value of consulting a prophet of the LORD. Believers are likewise called to prioritize God’s guidance through prayer, diligent study of Scripture, and the counsel of spiritually mature mentors. Proverbs 3:5‑6 (NIV) reminds us, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Moreover, Jehoshaphat’s later actions, after hearing Micaiah’s warning, show that trust in divine direction must be complete; half‑hearted reliance can lead to disastrous outcomes.

Lesson 2: Differentiating Between True and False Prophets

Jehoshaphat’s question also implies an awareness that not every self‑claimed prophet is trustworthy. The Bible urges believers to test every spirit, discerning true prophets from false ones (1 John 4:1, NIV). Comparing any teaching or prophecy with the truth of Scripture safeguards the church from deception.

Lesson 3: Trusting in God’s Guidance

The king’s inquiry demonstrates a desire to rely on God rather than solely on human wisdom. True trust, however, requires wholehearted dependence on God’s leading, as illustrated by Jehoshaphat’s decision to go into battle despite Micaiah’s warning. Proverbs 16:3 (NIV) advises, “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans,” encouraging believers to submit every plan to God’s will.

Lesson 4: The Importance of Unity

Jehoshaphat’s willingness to seek a prophet’s counsel before joining forces with Ahab shows a commitment to unity among God‑fearing leaders. Yet the passage warns that unity must not compromise fidelity to God, especially when partnering with those whose reign is marked by idolatry and disobedience. Discernment is essential to ensure alliances do not lead believers away from truth and righteousness.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 18:6 teaches the necessity of seeking divine counsel, discerning true from false prophets, placing complete trust in God’s guidance, and pursuing unity with careful discernment. Applying these principles helps believers make decisions that align with God’s will and experience His blessings.
