2 Chronicles 19:5

“And he set judges in the land throughout all the fenced cities of Judah, city by city.”

Context:The verse you mentioned is part of a narrative about King Jehoshaphat of Judah. After returning from a successful military campaign against the enemies of Israel, Jehoshaphat was met by the prophet Jehu, the son of Hanani. Jehu rebuked Jehoshaphat for his alliance with King Ahab of Israel, who was wicked in the sight of the Lord. Despite Jehoshaphat’s good intentions and reforms, this alliance had brought God’s displeasure upon him.

Establishment of Judges:In response to Jehu’s rebuke, Jehoshaphat set out to further reform his kingdom. He appointed judges in the land, particularly in the fortified cities of Judah. These judges were responsible for upholding justice and administering God’s law among the people.

The Purpose of Judges:The appointment of judges in Judah served multiple purposes. Firstly, it aimed to ensure that justice was upheld throughout the land. The judges would settle disputes, enforce the law, and maintain order. Secondly, by appointing judges in the fortified cities, Jehoshaphat sought to extend the reach of the legal system, providing accessible justice to the people.

God’s Law and Justice:The establishment of judges in accordance with God’s law reflects the importance of justice in the eyes of God. Throughout the Old Testament, God consistently emphasizes justice and fairness as essential components of a righteous society. In Deuteronomy 16:18‑20, God commands the Israelites to appoint judges and officials who will administer justice without partiality or corruption.
