2 Chronicles 19:9
And hee charged them, saying, Thus shall yee doe in the feare of the Lord faithfully, and with a perfect heart. 2 Chronicles 19:9 (KJV)
The verse is part of a narrative about King Jehoshaphat of Judah. Before a battle against King Ahab of Israel, he was confronted by the prophet Micaiah, who rebuked him for allying with the wicked King Ahab. After this confrontation, Jehoshaphat repented and returned to Jerusalem, where he implemented judicial reforms and appointed judges throughout the land. The passage reflects the spirit of Jehoshaphat’s charge to the judges recorded in 2 Chronicles 19. The words above are a paraphrase of his instruction to those judges.
And Jehoshaphat the king said to the judges, “Take heed and judge the people according to the law of the LORD, with reverence for God, fidelity, and a sincere heart.”
Fear of the Lord: Jehoshaphat emphasizes that the judges must act “in the fear of the LORD.” The fear of the Lord refers to a deep reverence, respect, and awe for God and His commands. It involves recognizing His authority and submitting to His will. The fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom and righteous living (Proverbs 9:10).
Faithfulness: Jehoshaphat instructs the judges to carry out their duties faithfully. Faithfulness implies a steadfast commitment to upholding justice, impartiality, and righteousness. The judges are to be trustworthy and consistent in their judgments, not swayed by personal biases or external influences.
Perfect heart: Jehoshaphat also urges the judges to serve with a perfect heart. A perfect heart refers to sincerity, integrity, and wholehearted devotion to God. It involves having pure motives and seeking to do what is right in God’s sight. Jesus taught the importance of having a pure heart in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:8).
Reverence for God: As believers, we should cultivate a healthy fear of the Lord, recognizing His sovereignty and submitting to His will in all areas of our lives.
Faithfulness in our roles: Whether as judges or in any other position of authority or responsibility, we should strive to be faithful, just, and unbiased in carrying out our duties. This applies not only to judicial matters but also to our relationships and commitments.
Integrity of heart: We should examine our hearts and ensure that our motives and actions align with God’s standards. Our service to God and others should flow from a sincere desire to honor Him.
