2 Chronicles 20:21

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed Singers vnto the Lord, and that should praise the beautie of holinesse, as they went out before the armie; and to say, Praise the Lord, for his mercy endureth for euer. 2 Chronicles 20:21 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the dramatic episode in the reign of King Jehoshaphat of Judah, when a great coalition of enemy nations threatened the nation. Confronted with such overwhelming odds, Jehoshaphat turned to the Lord rather than relying on human strength. He proclaimed a fast throughout Judah, gathered the people in Jerusalem, and led them in earnest prayer, acknowledging God’s sovereignty over all the kingdoms of the earth.

In response to the heartfelt petition, the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel, a Levite in the assembly, who delivered a prophetic word that the Lord Himself would fight for Judah and guarantee victory. The king and the assembled people fell on their faces in worship, expressing their total dependence on God.

After consulting with the people, Jehoshaphat appointed singers to go before the army. These were not combatants but individuals chosen to praise the Lord and declare His mercy and enduring love as they marched ahead of the troops. Their proclamation had two clear purposes: first, to praise the “beauty of holiness,” emphasizing the splendor, majesty, and sanctity of God’s character; second, to proclaim, “Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth forever,” highlighting the eternal nature of God’s mercy and faithfulness to His covenant people.

As the singers went out before the army, lifting voices of worship, the Lord set ambushes against the enemies of Judah. The opposing forces turned on one another and were completely destroyed, while Judah needed not lift a sword. This miraculous victory displayed God’s power and faithfulness in answering the prayers of a people who trusted Him wholeheartedly.

The passage teaches several valuable lessons. It reminds believers of the importance of seeking God’s guidance in times of crisis, of placing trust in divine deliverance rather than solely on human strategy. It also underscores the significance of worship and praise even amid danger, for such worship acknowledges God’s sovereignty, power, and steadfast mercy. Finally, it illustrates that God is willing to fight our battles when we worship Him with sincere faith.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 20:21 encourages us to follow Jehoshaphat’s example: seek the Lord, appoint praise before the battle, and trust in His enduring mercy. When faced with overwhelming challenges, a heart of worship can usher in divine intervention and victory.
