Listen to this article

And after all this, the Lord smote him in his bowels, with an incurable disease. 2 Chronicles 21:18 (KJV)

Context: To understand the significance of this verse, it is important to provide some background. 2 Chronicles 21 describes the reign of Jehoram, the son of King Jehoshaphat, over the southern kingdom of Judah. Jehoram was an evil king who followed the ways of the kings of Israel and led the people of Judah astray. He married into the royal family of Israel, which further influenced him to abandon the worship of God.

Divine Judgment: The verse reveals that the LORD smote Jehoram with an incurable disease of the bowels. This act of divine judgment was a direct response to Jehoram’s wickedness and idolatry, reminding us that God is just and will not tolerate disobedience and rebellion.

Physical Suffering: The affliction struck Jehoram’s bowels, causing a severe and incurable disease. This physical suffering underscores the concrete consequences of turning away from God’s ways and highlights the seriousness of divine retribution.

Severity of the Disease: The term “incurable” emphasizes the gravity of the disease. It was not a temporary ailment that could be easily healed, but a lasting punishment that symbolized the depth of God’s judgment upon Jehoram’s reign.

Spiritual Lesson: The passage serves as a cautionary example for believers, demonstrating the importance of remaining faithful to God’s commandments. It teaches that actions have consequences and that God’s judgment is righteous and just.

Application:

Obedience to God: Believers are called to obey God’s commands and live according to His principles. Jehoram’s example warns of the consequences of embracing sinful practices.

Accountability: The verse reminds us that we are accountable to God for our actions and should strive to live in a manner that pleases Him, avoiding idolatry and disobedience.

God’s Justice: God’s justice is not to be taken lightly; He will judge sin accordingly, urging us to pursue righteousness.

Repentance and Restoration: Though Jehoram was wicked, Scripture shows that repentance can lead to forgiveness and restoration. No matter how far one has strayed, God’s mercy and grace offer a chance for renewal.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 21:18 depicts the divine judgment that befell King Jehoram because of his wickedness and idolatry. It reminds us of the consequences of turning away from God, emphasizes the need for obedience and accountability, and points to the possibility of repentance and restoration through God’s merciful grace.
