2 Chronicles 23:11

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

Then they brought out the kings sonne, and put vpon him the Crowne, and gaue him the Testimony, and made him King: and Iehoiada and his sonnes anointed him, and said, God saue the King. 2 Chronicles 23:11 (KJV)

Context: This verse is part of the account of the coronation of Joash, the young son of King Ahaziah, in Judah. Joash’s father, Ahaziah, was killed by Jehu, a king of Israel who was executing God’s judgment on the wicked rulers of the Northern Kingdom. When Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, saw that her son was dead, she seized the opportunity to take power for herself and ordered the killing of all the royal heirs. However, Joash was spared by his aunt and hidden in the temple for six years. In this passage, the priests and Levites, led by Jehoiada, reveal Joash as the rightful king and anoint him.

Divine Appointment: Despite the chaos and evil that surrounded Joash’s family, God had a divine plan for his life. Joash was chosen by God to be the king of Judah, and the actions of Jehoiada and the faithful priests were instrumental in fulfilling God’s purpose. This reminds us that God is ultimately in control, even in the midst of difficult circumstances. It also highlights the importance of recognizing and following God’s appointed leaders.

Faithful Leadership: Jehoiada, the high priest, played a crucial role in the coronation of Joash. He not only preserved Joash’s life but also mentored and guided him towards assuming his rightful position as king. Jehoiada’s actions demonstrate the importance of godly leaders who are committed to preserving God’s purposes and training the next generation. It also emphasizes the significance of spiritual guidance and mentorship in the lives of young leaders.

The Testimony: The crown and the testimony were given to Joash during his coronation. The crown symbolizes the authority and responsibility of kingship, while the testimony may refer to a written record of God’s covenant, such as the Law. By receiving the crown and the testimony, Joash was entrusted with the task of leading the people of Judah in accordance with God’s laws. This underscores the importance of leaders adhering to God’s Word and ruling with righteousness and justice.

Proclamation: When Joash was anointed as king, Jehoiada and his sons declared, “The LORD save the king.” This proclamation acknowledged that Joash’s authority and rule came from God. It also served as a reminder to Joash that his position as king was not based on his own merit or power but was a divine appointment. This proclamation emphasizes the need for leaders to recognize their dependence on God and seek His wisdom and guidance in their leadership roles.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and consider the broader context of the passage to gain a deeper understanding. May this Bible study enrich your knowledge and faith.
