2 Chronicles 23:19

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“And he set the porters at the gates of the house of the LORD, that none which was unclean in any thing should enter in.”

This verse is a part of the historical account of the reign of King Joash (also known as Jehoash) of Judah. King Joash came to the throne at a young age and was guided by the high priest Jehoiada. Together, they worked to bring about religious reforms in the kingdom of Judah.

In the preceding verses, we read that Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord, the king, and the people to reestablish the true worship of God and remove idolatry from the land. One of the key actions taken was to restore the proper functioning of the temple and its services.

In 2 Chronicles 23:19, we see that Jehoiada set the porters, or gatekeepers, at the gates of the house of the Lord. Their responsibility was to guard the entrance to the temple and ensure that only those who were ceremonially clean and qualified could enter.

This act of setting the porters at the gates was important because it emphasised the importance of purity and holiness in approaching God’s presence. The people had strayed from God’s commandments and had allowed idolatry to infiltrate their worship. By establishing the gatekeepers, Jehoiada was ensuring that the house of the Lord would be a place of genuine worship and reverence for God.

The requirement for cleanliness before entering the temple was not only a physical condition but also a symbolic representation of the spiritual condition of the people. It served as a reminder that God is holy and demands holiness from His people. It also pointed to the need for repentance and purification of heart and actions.

This verse teaches us the importance of purity and reverence when we approach God. It reminds us that we should not take the presence of God lightly and that we must come before Him with a sincere and humble heart. Just as the gatekeepers were responsible for maintaining the sanctity of the temple, we too are called to guard our hearts and minds, ensuring that we keep ourselves free from sin and impurity.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 23:19 serves as a reminder of the significance of holiness in worship and the need for spiritual purity when approaching God. It highlights the importance of maintaining a right relationship with God and underscores the call to live a life that reflects His holiness.
