2 Chronicles 23:3

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And all the Congregation made a couenant with the king in the house of God: and he said vnto them, Beholde, the kings sonne shall reigne, as the Lord hath said of the sonnes of Dauid. 2 Chronicles 23:3 (KJV)

The historical backdrop of 2 Chronicles 23 records the rightful restoration of Joash, son of Ahaziah, to the throne of Judah. After King Ahaziah’s death, his mother Athaliah seized power and attempted to eliminate every member of the royal line. Joash, however, was rescued as an infant and hidden in the temple for six years by his aunt Jehoshabeath and her husband, the priest Jehoiada. When Joash turned seven, Jehoiada presented him before the people, securing his coronation as the legitimate king.

In verse 3 the phrase “all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God” describes a binding agreement between the people of Judah and Joash. The covenant signified the congregation’s public acknowledgment of Joash as the rightful monarch and their commitment to support his reign.

The declaration “Behold, the king’s son shall reign, as the Lord hath said of the sons of David” underscores the fulfillment of God’s promise to David that his descendants would occupy the throne forever (cf. 2 Samuel 7:12‑13). Despite Athaliah’s attempts to disrupt the Davidic line, God’s covenantal promise endured through Joash’s survival.

Spiritual lessons emerge from this account. First, the preservation of Joash in the temple demonstrates God’s faithfulness in difficult times, encouraging believers to trust in divine promises amid opposition. Second, the narrative highlights God’s sovereignty; human schemes, even those of a queen, cannot thwart His ordained purposes.

The covenant between the people and the king also illustrates the importance of loyalty and unity within God’s kingdom. It calls believers to commit themselves to God’s purposes and to stand together in fulfilling His will.

Finally, the reference to the “sons of David” points forward to the Messianic lineage, with Jesus Christ as the ultimate fulfillment of the Davidic promise, the eternal King who reigns forever.

Thus 2 Chronicles 23:3 marks a pivotal moment in Joash’s restoration, emphasizing God’s faithfulness, the establishment of a covenant, and the assured fulfillment of the promises concerning David’s royal descendants.
