2 Chronicles 24:19

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again unto the LORD; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear.”

Historical Context: To understand the significance of this verse, let’s first look at its historical context. This verse is part of the narrative about Joash, the king of Judah. Joash initially did what was right in the eyes of the Lord under the guidance of Jehoiada the priest. However, after Jehoiada’s death, Joash turned away from the Lord and began worshipping idols.

The Role of the Prophets: In this verse, we see that even though Joash and the people had turned away from God, He still sent prophets to them. The role of the prophets in the Old Testament was to deliver God’s messages, call people to repentance, and bring them back to the Lord. Despite the people’s disobedience, God showed His mercy and grace by sending messengers to warn them.

The Testimony of the Prophets: The verse states that the prophets testified against the people. The prophets spoke on behalf of God, calling the people to turn away from their sinful ways and return to the Lord. They likely reminded the people of the covenant and the consequences of forsaking God’s commands. The testimony of the prophets was a witness to the people’s rebellion and a plea for repentance.

Unheeded Warnings: Despite the prophets’ messages and their efforts to bring the people back to the Lord, the verse concludes by stating, “but they would not give ear.” This indicates that the people refused to listen or pay attention to the warnings and exhortations of the prophets. They hardened their hearts and continued in their idolatrous practices.
