2 Chronicles 25:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-horon, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil.”

Context:The book of 2 Chronicles is a historical account that focuses on the kings of Judah. In this particular chapter, we read about King Amaziah, who became king at the age of 25 and reigned for 29 years. He did what was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a loyal heart. In this verse, we find the consequences of his actions when he sent back the soldiers from the northern kingdom of Israel, who had come to help him in battle.

Key Points:

  • Amaziah’s decision:Amaziah was preparing for war against the Edomites and decided to hire additional troops from the northern kingdom of Israel. However, a man of God warned him that God was not with those troops and advised him not to include them in the battle. Despite the warning, Amaziah paid a large sum of money to hire them but then sent them back.
  • The soldiers’ actions:The soldiers from Israel, who were dismissed by Amaziah, were angry and frustrated. Instead of returning home, they unleashed their anger on the cities of Judah. They attacked several cities, causing destruction and taking spoils.
  • Consequences of Amaziah’s decision:Amaziah’s decision to send away the soldiers had unintended consequences. The very troops he had dismissed turned against his own people, causing harm and loss. This incident highlights the importance of seeking God’s guidance and following His instructions rather than relying on human strategies.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Trust in God:Amaziah’s mistake was that he relied on his own strength and military strategy rather than seeking God’s guidance. As believers, we should trust in the Lord and seek His wisdom in all our decisions, big or small. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
  • The consequences of disobedience:Amaziah’s disobedience had severe consequences not only for himself but also for the people of Judah. Disobeying God’s instructions can lead to unintended negative outcomes. It is crucial for us to be obedient to God’s Word and seek His will in everything we do.
  • The danger of compromising with ungodly influences:Amaziah’s decision to hire soldiers from the northern kingdom, despite the warning from the man of God, shows the danger of compromising with ungodly influences. As Christians, we need to be cautious about aligning ourselves with those who do not share our faith or values. Second Corinthians 6:14 advises, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?”
  • Repentance and restoration:After the attack by the dismissed soldiers, Amaziah realized his mistake and sought the counsel of the prophet. He repented and turned back to God. This teaches us the importance of recognizing our errors, repenting, and seeking restoration in our relationship with God. The Lord is merciful and gracious, and He forgives those who humbly come to Him in repentance.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 25:13 reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s guidance, obeying His instructions, and avoiding compromise with ungodly influences. It also highlights the consequences of disobedience and the need for repentance and restoration when we realize our mistakes.
