2 Chronicles 25:16

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And it came to passe as hee talked with him, that the king said vnto him, Art thou made of the Kings counsell? forbeare; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the Prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened vnto my counsell. 2 Chronicles 25:16 (KJV)

the king

said unto him, Art thou made of the king’s counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel. 2 Chronicles 25:16 (KJV)

In this passage we encounter King Amaziah of Judah confronting a prophetic voice. Amaziah, after achieving a military victory, turns to a prophet for guidance. The king asks, “Art thou made of the king’s counsel?” and the prophet replies that God has determined destruction for the king because he has acted contrary to divine instruction and has not hearkened to the prophet’s counsel. The narrative underscores the seriousness of ignoring godly warning.

Key points emerge from the account. First, Amaziah’s willingness to seek counsel demonstrates an initial recognition of the value of spiritual insight. Second, his subsequent resistance to the prophet’s warning reveals the danger of pride and stubbornness. The prophet’s declaration that God has determined destruction highlights the inevitable consequences of disobedience and the importance of heeding divine direction.

From these observations we learn several timeless lessons. Believers are encouraged to pursue godly counsel from mature, Scripture‑grounded mentors, pastors, or trusted believers when faced with important decisions. Humility is essential; a teachable spirit allows correction to shape wiser choices. Ignoring such counsel can lead to adverse outcomes, as illustrated by Amaziah’s downfall. Ultimately, trust must rest in God’s wisdom above all human advice, with the Holy Spirit and the Word serving as primary guides.

Application follows naturally. When confronting significant choices, actively seek counsel from those rooted in biblical truth. Receive advice with openness, allowing the Holy Spirit to confirm or challenge it through prayer. Align every decision with Scripture, recognizing that God’s sovereign plan surpasses human understanding and works ultimately for our good. By embodying these principles, we grow in wisdom and honor God in our daily lives.
