2 Chronicles 25:23
And Ioash the king of Israel tooke Amaziah king of Iudah the son of Ioash, the son of Ioahaz, at Bethshemesh, and brought him to Ierusalem, and brake downe the wall of Ierusalem, from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, foure hundred cubits. 2 Chronicles 25:23 (KJV)
This verse belongs to the historical account of King Amaziah of Judah. Amaziah was the son of King Joash of Judah and reigned for twenty‑nine years. He ascended the throne at the age of twenty‑five and sought to bring stability and military strength to his kingdom, leading several campaigns that produced both victories and defeats.
The passage records a conflict with Jehoash (also called Joash), the king of the northern kingdom of Israel. After Amaziah challenged Jehoash to battle, Jehoash warned him not to provoke trouble and urged him to be content with his earlier victory over Edom. Amaziah ignored the warning, fought, and was defeated. The narrative says that Joash took Amaziah at Beth‑shemesh and brought him to Jerusalem. Some descriptions add that the Israelites carried Amaziah’s dead body to Jerusalem and left it at the house of Millo, while other accounts emphasize his capture.
In the same episode Joash broke down a portion of Jerusalem’s wall—from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate—a distance of four hundred cubits. The destruction weakened the city’s defenses and served as a visible sign of Israel’s dominance over Judah.
The story highlights several timeless lessons. Amaziah’s pride and overconfidence led him to disregard wise counsel, resulting in personal defeat and national humiliation. The consequences of his imprudent actions underscore the importance of seeking God’s guidance and weighing the outcomes of one’s decisions. Even amid defeat, the events demonstrate God’s sovereign purpose, allowing judgment on Amaziah’s disobedience while advancing the larger divine plan. Overall, 2 Chronicles 25:23 warns against pride, urges reliance on divine wisdom, and affirms God’s sovereign control over human affairs.
