2 Chronicles 25:28

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the LORD they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there.”

Context:To understand this verse better, it’s important to consider the context in which it is found. In this chapter, we read about the reign of Amaziah, who became the king of Judah at the age of 25. Initially, Amaziah followed the Lord and experienced military success. However, he later turned away from God and worshiped idols. This verse occurs after his apostasy and shows the consequences of his actions.

Consequences of turning away from God:Amaziah’s decision to turn away from following the Lord had severe consequences. It led to a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem. The people who were once under his rule conspired against him, likely due to his unfaithfulness and idolatry. This event serves as a reminder that turning away from God and pursuing sinful practices can have negative repercussions in our lives.

Flight to Lachish:When the conspiracy against Amaziah became known, he fled to the city of Lachish to seek refuge. Lachish was a fortified city located in southwestern Judah. This decision to flee highlights the fear and desperation Amaziah faced in the face of opposition. It also reveals the lack of trust and reliance on God’s protection that should have characterised his life.

Pursuit and death:Although Amaziah sought safety in Lachish, his pursuers did not give up. They sent men after him to Lachish, where he was eventually found and killed. Despite his attempts to escape, Amaziah was unable to evade the consequences of his actions. This serves as a sobering reminder that the consequences of our choices and actions may catch up with us, regardless of the measures we take to avoid them.

Lessons for us today:The story of Amaziah’s downfall holds several lessons for us. It emphasises the importance of remaining faithful to God and not turning away from Him. It reminds us that sin has consequences and can lead to destruction. Additionally, it highlights the need for trust in God’s protection and guidance, rather than relying on our own devices. It serves as a warning against the dangers of idolatry and the pursuit of worldly desires.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 25:28 recounts the tragic end of Amaziah’s reign due to his apostasy and unfaithfulness to God. It serves as a reminder of the consequences that can follow when we turn away from God and the importance of remaining steadfast in our faith.
