2 Chronicles 25:5

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield.”

Context: The book of 2 Chronicles is a historical account that focuses on the reigns of the kings of Judah, the southern kingdom of Israel. In 2 Chronicles 25, we read about the reign of King Amaziah. He became king at the age of 25 and reigned for 29 years.

Leadership and Military Organization: In verse 5, we see that King Amaziah took charge of organizing and training the military forces of Judah. He divided them into units, appointing captains over thousands and hundreds. This organisational structure allowed for effective leadership and command during times of war.

Recruitment and Numbering: Amaziah also conducted a census of men capable of going to war, from the age of twenty and above. The result was three hundred thousand choice men who were skilled in the use of weapons such as spears and shields. This indicates that Amaziah had a sizeable and capable army at his disposal.

Trust in Human Strength: While the verse highlights the strength and preparation of the army, it’s important to consider the broader context of Amaziah’s reign. In subsequent verses, we learn that Amaziah sought to hire additional soldiers from the northern kingdom of Israel. However, a prophet warned him not to rely on human strength or assistance but to trust in the Lord (2 Chronicles 25:7-10).

Application: As we reflect on this verse, there are a few lessons we can draw:

  • Effective leadership: Amaziah’s initiative to organise and train the military demonstrates the importance of leadership in preparing and equipping those under our charge. In various areas of life, good leadership can lead to greater efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Diligence and preparedness: The fact that Amaziah took the time to number and assess the military’s capabilities indicates the importance of diligence and preparedness. In our own lives, we can strive to be diligent and well-prepared in the tasks and responsibilities entrusted to us.
  • Trust in God: Although Amaziah had a powerful army at his disposal, he was reminded by a prophet not to put his trust solely in human strength. This serves as a reminder for us to put our trust in God rather than relying solely on our own abilities or resources. We should seek His guidance and wisdom in all areas of life.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 25:5 highlights both the practical aspects of military organisation and the need for reliance on God’s guidance and strength.
