2 Chronicles 28:12

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

Then certeine of the heads of the children of Ephraim, Azariah the sonne of Iohanan, Berechiah the sonne of Meshillemoth, and Iehizkiah the son of Shallum, and Amasa the sonne of Hadlai, stood vp against them that came from the warre, 2 Chronicles 28:12 (KJV)

The verse is set within the historical account of King Ahaz of Judah, an ungodly ruler who turned away from the Lord, worshiped idols, and led his people into disobedience. 2 Chronicles 28 records the consequences of Ahaz’s unfaithfulness, describing how the northern kingdom of Israel, under King Pekah, attacked Judah and inflicted severe damage. The northern army captured many Judeans—including women and children—and seized a great amount of spoil.

In verse 12 we encounter a group of leaders from the tribe of Ephraim who stood against their fellow countrymen who had returned from the war with Judah. Ephraim, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, was a prominent tribe in the northern kingdom. The passage names four specific heads: Azariah son of Johanan, Berechiah son of Meshillemoth, Jehizkiah son of Shallum, and Amasa son of Hadlai. Their opposition is linked to the prophetic message delivered by Oded, who condemned the Israelites for their violent conquest and urged them to release the captives.

Although the primary focus of 2 Chronicles 28 is on Ahaz and the calamities that befell Judah, the mention of these Ephraim leaders highlights internal divisions within the northern kingdom during this turbulent period. Their stance against the returning warriors underscores a moral tension: while some Israelites pursued plunder and oppression, others, guided by prophetic rebuke, called for compassion and the restoration of those taken captive.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 28:12 reveals the existence of internal opposition within Israel’s northern kingdom during its war with Judah. The verse does not detail the precise reasons for the Ephraim leaders’ resistance, but it emphasizes the broader turmoil and disunity that plagued Israel at that time, offering a glimpse of conscience amid the prevailing violence.
