2 Chronicles 3:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

And he began to build in the second day of the second moneth, in the fourth yeere of his reigne. 2 Chronicles 3:2 (KJV)

The verse places the commencement of Solomon’s temple construction in a precise chronological framework. It tells us that the work started in the second month of the Hebrew calendar, known as the month of Zif, and that this occurred in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign. This specificity underscores the orderly planning that characterized the building project.

Historical Context

Solomon succeeded his father David as king of Israel. His reign is celebrated for prosperity, wisdom, and the ambitious building program that included the temple in Jerusalem. The temple was intended to be a permanent dwelling place for the presence of God among His people, a central focus of Israel’s worship.

Timing of the Construction

The mention of the second month and the fourth year provides a clear chronological marker. It shows that Solomon did not delay in beginning the work after he became king, but moved promptly to fulfill the divine mandate given to his father David.

Symbolism and Spiritual Significance

The precise dating reflects order and precision in God’s plans. By recording the exact month and year, the Scripture highlights the importance of careful execution when establishing God’s house. Solomon’s immediate action demonstrates diligence and promptness, modeling obedient response to God’s call.

Spiritual Application

Believers are encouraged to respond promptly to God’s assignments, approaching each task with diligence, precision, and an awareness of divine timing. The verse reminds us that God values orderly preparation and faithful execution in the work He entrusts to us. May we, like Solomon, honor God by beginning His work with the same zeal and exacting care.
