2 Chronicles 30:10
So the Posts passed from citie to citie, through the countrey of Ephraim and Manasseh, euen vnto Zebulun: but they laughed them to scorne, and mocked them. 2 Chronicles 30:10 (KJV)
Historical Context: This verse belongs to the account of King Hezekiah’s effort to reinstate the Passover celebration in Judah. Hezekiah sent an invitation to all the Israelites—both those from the former northern kingdom and those from the southern kingdom of Judah—to come to Jerusalem and celebrate the Passover together. The northern kingdom had already been conquered by the Assyrians, and many of its people were in exile, yet Hezekiah extended the invitation to the remaining inhabitants, hoping for unity and reconciliation among the divided people of Israel.
The Effort to Restore Unity: Hezekiah’s purpose was to bring the northern and southern kingdoms together in worship of the Lord, to reunite the people and restore true worship of God. Messengers were dispatched throughout the land, reaching the territories of Ephraim, Manasseh, and Zebulun. Instead of a positive response, the people “laughed them to scorn, and mocked them,” a reaction that reflects the deep division and hostility that existed between the kingdoms at that time. Later in the chapter (verses 13‑14) many who heard the invitation ridiculed and mocked the messengers, underscoring the opposition to unity.
Lessons from the Verse: The passage teaches persistence in extending invitations. Hezekiah’s messengers diligently carried the message of unity and reconciliation, and believers are likewise called to persist in sharing God’s love, forgiveness, and reconciliation even when initially rejected or mocked. The response of the people highlights the reality that unity is not always easily achieved and that opposition may arise. Moreover, the mocking response reveals pride and an unwillingness to let go of past grievances; true unity requires humility, forgiveness, and a willingness to release grudges.
Application: Christians should pursue unity in the body of Christ, striving for harmony among believers regardless of differences or past conflicts, and loving and forgiving one another as God has forgiven us. Like Hezekiah’s messengers, we are to extend invitations for reconciliation and reach out to those with whom we have strained relationships, offering and seeking forgiveness. When faced with resistance, we must not be discouraged but continue to persevere in proclaim
