2 Chronicles 30:13

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“And there assembled at Jerusalem much people to keep the feast of unleavened bread in the second month, a very great congregation.”

Historical Context:The verse you mentioned is part of the account of King Hezekiah’s efforts to restore the worship of God in Judah. Hezekiah sought to bring the people back to God and reinstitute the proper observance of the Passover feast. The people of Israel had neglected this important feast for many years, and Hezekiah desired to reunite the nation in the worship of the Lord.

The Feast of Unleavened Bread:The Feast of Unleavened Bread was closely connected to the Passover and lasted for seven days. It commemorated the Israelites’ hasty departure from Egypt when they had to eat unleavened bread because there was no time for the dough to rise (Exodus 12:17-18). It was a time of remembrance, celebration, and gratitude for God’s deliverance.

Assembling in Jerusalem:The verse highlights that a large number of people gathered in Jerusalem to observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread. This gathering demonstrates the positive response of the people to Hezekiah’s call and the renewed interest in honoring God’s appointed feasts. It also reflects the unity and sense of national identity as the people came together to worship the Lord.

Second Month:It is noteworthy that the Feast of Unleavened Bread was traditionally celebrated in the first month (Exodus 12:18). However, due to the religious reforms initiated by Hezekiah and the people’s delay in purifying themselves, the feast was postponed to the second month. This demonstrates the flexibility and grace that God allowed for the people to participate fully in the celebration despite their initial unpreparedness.

Importance of Corporate Worship:The gathering of a “very great congregation” indicates the significance of communal worship. The people recognized the importance of coming together as a community to worship God and celebrate His faithfulness. Corporate worship fosters unity, encourages spiritual growth, and provides an opportunity for believers to edify and encourage one another.
