For

there were many in the congregation that were not sanctified: therefore the Levites had the charge of the killing of the passovers for every one

that was not clean, to sanctify

them

unto the LORD. 2 Chronicles 30:17 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account describing King Hezekiah’s efforts to restore the Passover celebration in Judah. Hezekiah had sent letters throughout Israel and Judah, inviting the people to come to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover and make a covenant with the Lord (2 Chronicles 30:1‑6). In verse 17 we learn that many in the congregation were not sanctified or ceremonially clean according to the requirements of the Law. The Levites handled the Passover sacrifices for those who were unclean, enabling their participation despite not meeting the ritual purity requirements.

The passage highlights several important principles.

First, the significance of sanctification: in this context, sanctification involved meeting the requirements of ritual purity under the Mosaic Law and being set apart for a holy purpose. It reminds believers of the importance of consecrating themselves and purifying their hearts before approaching God.

Second, the inclusion of all people: the fact that many were not sanctified shows that Hezekiah welcomed everyone to participate in the Passover, regardless of their initial state of purity. This underscores the inclusive nature of God’s grace and His desire for all people to come to Him, irrespective of past or present circumstances.

Third, the role of the Levites: as the designated priestly tribe responsible for religious rituals, the Levites facilitated the participation of unclean individuals by handling the Passover sacrifices. Their work illustrates the vital role of spiritual leaders in guiding and assisting others in their relationship with God.

Finally, the desire for genuine worship: Hezekiah’s invitation aimed to renew the covenant with the Lord and encourage sincere worship. By ensuring that everyone had the opportunity to partake, he sought to create an atmosphere of authentic devotion to God. Overall, the verse emphasizes sanctification, inclusivity, the leadership of the Levites, and the pursuit of heartfelt worship, teaching the significance of preparing ourselves and assisting others in approaching God with reverence and sincerity.
