2 Chronicles 30:19

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

“That prepareth his heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers, though he be not cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary.”

Historical Background: 2 Chronicles 30 describes the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah and his efforts to restore the worship of God in Jerusalem. Hezekiah invited all the people of Israel, both from the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah, to come and celebrate the Passover in Jerusalem. Many people responded to the king’s invitation, including those who were not ceremonially cleansed according to the laws of the sanctuary.

Preparing the Heart: In verse 19, it says, “That prepareth his heart to seek God.” This verse highlights the importance of the condition of one’s heart when seeking God. It emphasizes that genuine worship and seeking after God is not merely about external rituals or ceremonies but about the condition of the heart. It’s not about adhering to the letter of the law, but about having a sincere and wholehearted desire to seek and connect with God.

Seeking the LORD God of His Fathers: The verse also mentions seeking “the LORD God of his fathers.” This phrase signifies a return to the true God of Israel, the God who had made a covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It highlights the importance of connecting with God in the context of the relationship established by their forefathers. It shows the significance of honoring the heritage of faith and seeking after the same God who had been faithful to their ancestors.

Cleansing and Purification: The latter part of the verse acknowledges that some of the people who came to celebrate the Passover were not ceremonially cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary. This refers to the prescribed rituals and requirements for purification before participating in sacred events. Despite not being completely pure, these individuals had prepared their hearts to seek God.

Spiritual Application: The verse holds a valuable spiritual lesson for believers today. It reminds us that God looks beyond external appearances and rituals and focuses on the condition of our hearts. God desires sincerity, humility, and genuine seeking after Him. It is not about trying to attain perfection before coming to God but about coming to Him with an open and prepared heart.

  • The Grace of God: The passage also highlights God’s grace and His willingness to receive those who come to Him with a sincere heart, even if they don’t meet all the requirements or have shortcomings. It reminds us that God’s acceptance and forgiveness are not dependent on our ability to perfectly fulfill every religious practice but on His loving-kindness and mercy.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 30:19 emphasizes the importance of preparing our hearts to seek God sincerely. It teaches us that external rituals and traditions are not the essence of true worship but rather having a genuine desire to connect with God. The verse also highlights the gracious nature of God, who welcomes those who come to Him with an open heart, regardless of their imperfections.
