2 Chronicles 33:20

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“So Manasseh slept with his fathers, and they buried him in his own house: and Amon his son reigned in his stead.”

Context:This verse is found in the Old Testament book of 2 Chronicles, which is a historical account of the kings of Judah. In this particular verse, we learn about the death of King Manasseh and the succession of his son, Amon.

To gain a deeper understanding of this verse, it’s essential to examine the context and background of the passage. King Manasseh was one of the kings of Judah and is considered to be one of the most wicked and idolatrous kings in the history of Judah. He led the people astray by promoting the worship of false gods and engaging in various sinful practices.

Despite his evil reign, the Bible records a significant turning point in Manasseh’s life. In 2 Chronicles 33:11-13, we read about how Manasseh was captured by the Assyrians and taken into captivity. During his time of affliction, he humbled himself before God, repented of his sins, and sought the Lord’s forgiveness. In response to Manasseh’s repentance, God showed him mercy, allowed him to return to Jerusalem, and reinstated him as king.

In verse 20, we learn that Manasseh eventually died and was buried in his own house. The fact that he was buried in his own house instead of the royal tombs indicates a loss of honour or a lack of distinction, possibly due to his previous wickedness. This detail serves as a reminder of the consequences of Manasseh’s sinful actions, despite his later repentance.

The verse also tells us that Manasseh’s son, Amon, succeeded him as king. Unfortunately, Amon did not follow in his father’s footsteps of repentance and continued in the evil ways of idolatry. His reign was short-lived, as he was eventually assassinated by his own servants (2 Chronicles 33:21-25).

Overall, this verse highlights the contrast between the repentance of Manasseh and the subsequent unfaithfulness of his son, Amon. It serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking God’s forgiveness, as well as the consequences that can result from a life of disobedience.
